For movies, i suggest DVDrip files. These are smallish (700 mb usually) files but look pretty darn good.
AXXO, and FXG are 2 "groups" that consistently do very nice DVDrips. I have a nice little trick.go to your user. Then to Music, Then to "Itunes media" (user/music/Itunes media) there will be a folder labeled "Automatically Add to iTunes". Make an alias of that folder and put it somewhere useful like the desktop, or your dropbox, or drag it to the sidebar. HARDWARE: 
Basically it is a older Mac Mini (intel) with a DVI-HDMI Adapter. The Mac sees our TV as if it were a computer monitor, except once you are in Front Row (OS X's default media center app) it looks like a media center. I have external computer speakers as well (i ditched the receiver). So what is my verdict 3 some years out.

Love it. 

Sure initial expenses were high, but i knew I would pay off the cost of my mac with the savings from not having 100 bucks a month on cable. it's a little too simple sometimes but that's it's beauty. it is great to watch youtube and hulu and Netflix... simple, legal, and did i mention simple.
